The Convenience Of The Notebook Computer

With the introduction of the internet, the world has transformed into a global village. And now with the help of the notebook you can carry the world in your shoulder. The greatest advantages that we have today from the notebook computers is that it gives us the very sense of mobility. If we look at the feature of the notebook to be portable critically, then is it the only advantage of the notebook over the desktop computer? The notebook computer lets you carry your entire workload conveniently and you also don’t have to worry about the wired connections, hardware and spaces to place it like the desktop computer. Also when the choice of working either at home or office comes, the notebook comes in handy, since you can carry it anywhere.

Gone are the days when people used to carry pen and paper to write down certain things. A notebook has a different role to play for different people. However the common thing that every one can enjoy is the freedom. that it brings. Many times you may feel like writing an e-mail to your friends or listen to songs or watch your favorite video clip while you are traveling. At those times, the notebook can work as wonders for you. The only thing that you have to worry about is the weight of the notebook on your shoulders. A notebook usually weighs between 5 to 10 pounds, and if you go for the ultra model they are even lighter. Whereas a desk top computer along with its central processing unit , monitor, mouse and keyboard weighs about 70 pounds. The note book takes up less space and is much more convenient.

You will realize a notebook to be a wise choice, as soon as you look at the productive side of the picture. At any critical moment, the notebook can do the tasks, and that can be possible even if you are not at the office. Compared to the notebook computer the desktop computer cannot provide you with all the facilities that are mentioned above.

It has been researched that employers who have notebook computes work more efficiently than those companies with desktop PCs. Since the notebook enables you to work from anywhere, you may carry it to anywhere, and for that reason, the only disadvantages of the notebook is about its safety. It is easy to be picked up and taken away from anybody at any busy commercial place. So, be sure that you keep your costly gadget safe and secure, so that you can have the world at your feet and enjoy the advantages of the latest technologies.

Fixing Computer Slowdowns and Stopping Them From Crashing

Most people recognize it as “the blue screen of death.” The computer crash screen can be a very frustrating experience. The sudden appearance of this screen is a terrifying, especially if you were about to finish something important and you forgot to save it.

All of your hard work is lost because your computer decided to give up and crash. Most people never expect their computer to crash, but they should understand everyone is prone to having computer failures.

The Early Signs

Prior to crashing, your computer will probably start to act differently. This can include things like going very slow and even freezing. This should be the first sign your computer is about to crash, or that there are problems with it. Your computer needs a little bit of fixing or tweaking so it can get back to proper working condition.

The first cause of a computer crash could be associated with recently installed hardware or programs. Check to make sure any new additions to your computer have been installed properly. Sometimes, your programs just need to be updated, especially if you are running a brand new operating system. Some older versions of hardware and software might not be compatible with your system at all, so do your research before you install anything.

The Registry

The registry can become corrupt and cause a lot of problems for your computer. The registry is what your Windows operating system is made of. If it gets too bloated and its files become unorganized, a crash is likely to occur. The registry files can be repaired, and better yet, kept in top condition by running a registry-cleaning program on a regular basis. This will in most cases prevent computer slow downs and crashes.

Your computer is able to perform several different types of tasks. It’s not uncommon for it to get bogged down and tired. Crashing means serious problems are developing with your registry. This is something that can’t be taken lightly. In fact, there could come a point when the registry gets so corrupted, only a complete hard drive reformat will help.

There is hope

On the other hand, I’ve seen it happen many times when somebody was advised it was time to reformat the hard drive and then re-install the operating system when this was not necessary. What really needed to be done was to have a technician scan for viruses and spyware from another computer.

Then when the computer got back up on its feet again, a registry cleaner finished the job of restoring the computer to excellent health. Of course, if the registry had been cleaned regularly in the first place, the computer may never have gotten to this critical stage of near death.

There was an old T.V. commercial where an automobile mechanic proclaimed, “You can pay me now or pay me later.” He was referring to the fact you could pay a little more for a better oil filter now, or pay for a new engine later.

This axiom holds true for today’s operating systems. You can spend a little time and incur a small expense now to keep your registry clean and organized, or you may lose all your files to a reformat later. If you ask me, it is an easy choice!

Inkjet Printer Buying Guide - Pros and Cons for the Consumer

Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Epson and Lexmark are responsible for the majority of inkjet printer sales and printer supplies in the global consumer market. If you have plans to buy an inkjet printer, this article will definitely help you in arriving at the right choice.

What are the different types of inkjet cheap printers available in the market?

Basic Inkjet Printers:

If you need to print web pages, spreadsheets and text documents, a basic inkjet printer that uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and key) or black ink will best suit your needs.

Inkjet Photo Printers:

To create higher-quality photo prints, use six-color inkjet photo printers with CMYK ink as well as light cyan and light magenta. Do you want to print photos directly from your digital camera? Go for inkjet photo printers with an LCD preview screen, PictBridge to transfer images directly from your digital camera over USB and media card slots compatible with the memory cards you use in your digital camera.

Portable Inkjet Printers:

You should select a printer that weighs less than 5 pounds if you travel a lot on business.

Inkjet Multifunction Printers:

This printer allows you to print, scan and copy, all at the touch of a button. However, you will you have to compromise a little on quality. Printers with faxing capabilities are also available.

What is the maximum printing speed of an inkjet printer?

The speed of an inkjet printer is measured by the number of pages it can print per minute (ppm). A standard inkjet printer has three levels of quality settings: draft, normal and best. The speed decreases if you want high quality outputs. Manufacturers test the speed of a printer by printing basic text at the lowest quality setting, If you plan to print at normal quality settings, the real speed is likely to be about half the speed stated by the manufacturer.

If you often print graphics with your inkjet printer, speed is an important factor. Based on your printers system configurations, print mode, page coverage, document complexity and software, print speeds vary. In a standard inkjet printer, print speed for black text differs between 1 to 28 ppm. For color photos and graphics, speeds range from 1 to 20 ppm.

What resolution is good for quality printing?

Another area you have to concentrate on is print resolution. Printers are identified as being of good quality if they feature print resolutions in excess of 1440 dots per inch (dpi). The maximum color resolution that an inkjet printer generally has is 2400 x 1200 dpi. Some high-end models have up to 4800 x 1200 dpi. Look for a resolution of least 600 x 600 dpi for text printing and a minimum of 1200 x 600 dpi for graphics and photos. It is important to remember that the quality of output does not depend upon the resolution alone. It also depends upon the inkjet system used by the manufacturer and the colour management system.

In what way can memory capacity and memory card slots assist you?

Memory capacity should be a major factor when buying an inkjet printer because the built-in RAM cannot be expanded. You should check how much RAM is included with the printer you intend to buy. Basic models have 768 KB of RAM while the standard photo model comes with at least 8 MB of RAM for printing high-quality images.

Several inkjet printers feature memory card slots that support CompactFlash, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card and XD-Picture Card as well as other more advanced memory cards. Before buying a printer, confirm that it can read the memory cards that you already own.

Are you looking for a printer to share?

If you want to share a printer with other computers over a home or business network, you should check to see whether it has a wired or wireless connection. Inkjet printers connect to your computer through a USB or FireWire (IEEE 1394) port. Today, many printers use Wi-Fi technology to print wirelessly. Some models of inkjet printers are network-ready right out of the box, while others come in standalone and network-ready versions. The most expensive option is an inject printer that support a network add-on. However, this model may be more economical in the long run if you want to share the printer with other people.

What is the paper handling capacity of the printer?

The paper handling capacity should be of great concern to you if you print frequently or in bulk. In such cases, search for a printer that can hold a large quantity of paper at a time. Many inkjet printers have paper trays that take up to 250 sheets. Inkjet printers with ship paper trays can handle only 100 or 150 sheets and envelopes. Few business-oriented models feature option of additional paper trays.

Which type of printer cartridge is better?

Every standard inkjet printer comes with four ink colors based on the CMYK color method. Normally, the cyan, magenta and yellow inks are packaged in individual containers within a single cartridge. A separate cartridge with black ink is also included.

Today, most professionals use three types of inks for their inkjet printers. Solvent inks are low in price and used for producing vehicle graphics, billboards and banners. UV-curable inks dry quickly and are mainly used for good images. For better color and durability, dye sublimation inks are preferred.

While purchasing an inkjet printer, find out which type of ink cartridges it takes and ensure that replacement of these cartridges is easy. Also check whether you can replace individual ink cartridges or you have to replace the entire bunch at once.

Which are the inexpensive head designs for inkjet printers?

Every inkjet printer has either a fixed or a disposable head design. The fixed head design is built-in and lasts for the entire life of the printer. Most inkjet heads feature micropiezo technology for precise dot placement. With this fixed design, you do not have to replace the head every time the ink runs out. The disposable head design comes with ink cartridges. You will have to replace both the cartridges and print head once the ink is exhausted.

What are the consumables in an inkjet printer?

Many models of inkjet printers have detachable drums, printer ink cartridges, developer units, fusers and a few other components which need occasional replacement. Combining all these consumables into one cartridge is the best approach. Replacing an integrated cartridge is less expensive when compared to the expense of replacing individual consumables at a time. But if one component fails in an integrated cartridge, then you have to replace the cartridge itself. Also, find out the cost for per-page printing as it differs among cheap printers. The per-page printing cost can be calculated by dividing the price by the evaluated output of a cartridge.

If inkjet is not for you, consider laser printers.

What is Shared Hosting?

When a single server serves pages for many websites, each with its own domain name then this type of hosting is known as shared hosting. What happens is that some small companies do not want to use their resources to host their website on a dedicated server, as it requires a system administrator and the companies want to save their own time and money. As the companies want to minimize the cost so the shared hosting service provider is mainly responsible for the management of the servers, server software installation, installation of anti virus and security updates, technical support related to the above-mentioned services. As many companies use Linux operating system because of its reliability, so many companies mainly offer Linux basted servers. Some hosts also provide Microsoft windows based servers and solutions. Both of the operating systems have similar functions but they differ in operating system related issues.

How it works: Web hosting can be done by two methods; name based hosting and IP based hosting. The name based hosting uses a single IP that is utilized by different hostnames/web sites. When a browser requests a web page from a server using HTTP/1.1 then it also includes a hostname that is used for finding the web site that can then be delivered to the user. IP based hosting has the advantage that each host has its own IP address. This helps the sites to use their own SSL certificate, which helps in increasing the security. In contrast to name based hosting method, where there is only one IP address used by all the hostnames/web sites. Many people/companies prefer IP based hosting method because of the above mentioned reason. Many servers are changing their web hosting method to IP based hosting as it offers much more security then name based hosting method. But one important thing to remember about shared hosting, no matter which method is used, is that they are always a bit insecure. Advantages and Disadvantages:- The companies lack control over the server as the server is shared by many, so they cannot ask for extra privileges. There is an added threat of insecurity as the shared server might not always be secure. On the other hand, one can save quite some money and time by using shared hosting. No system administrator is needed as it is a shared hosting. Name based hosts are not compatible with old browsers that do not send the hostname as part of the requests. For example, the older HTTP/1.0 browsers that were not upgraded cannot send the hostname as part of their requests. They also do not support HTTPS websites, as all name-based hosts using the same IP must share the same digital certificate. A TLS extension gives a way for the client to provide the hostname as part of the handshake’. If the DNS or Domain Name System is not working properly then the name based hosted website is difficult to use and using an IP address in the address bar would not work as many website are sharing same IP.

Know More About Load Balancing

Load balancing, by definition, is the process of spreading the amount of work that is conducted by a computer system between a number of different computer systems to increase the speed that the work is completed in. There are several different methods in which load balancing can be accomplished by and the technique can use many different types of computer components, including both hardware and software applications. Load balancing is typically completed using a cluster of computer servers that may or may not be located in the same location.

There are many different companies that see the benefits of using this process and implement the procedure for their companies. Companies that conduct business transactions in large numbers using the internet are prime candidates to use this method to ensure that all of their clients and customers will be able to conduct their transactions quickly and accurately. Companies that need to network a great deal of computers for individual users also typically use this to ensure that all computers will work properly and have the right amount of power to be able to perform the functions that they are intended to perform. It also ensures that the company will still be able to do business if one server becomes corrupted or goes down for an extended period of time.

There are several different methods that are widely used for load balancing. One of the most popular methods is Global Server Load Balancing. This technique distributes the incoming tasks to a group of servers in a particular geographic location. This technique is widely used by companies that have a global presence and have a need to satisfy customers or employees in many different geographical locations. Using Global Server Load Balancing ensures that the work load is distributed throughout the entire server system in an easy to manage manner and ensures that all geographical locations are obtaining the correct information from the correct set of servers.

Another load balancing technique that is commonly used is called Persistence Load Balancing. This technique assigns each new client to a different server in a round robin type of allocation. This client is then assigned to this specific server for the future of their relationship with the business. This ensures that no one server is overloaded with a particular type of client, such as those in a certain geographical area or use a specific type of service and ensures that the clients are distributed evenly through out all of the servers that the business possesses. These server assignments are typically monitored by using the customers IP address as the customer’s unique identification code.

Content, Cost Savings And Convergence Drive Network Storage

Over the past decade, organizations of all stripes have experienced phenomenal growth in the data volumes they must manage in order to compete and win in a challenging and dynamic marketplace. Traditionally, organizations employed corporate messaging and business applications in order to foster employee productivity and manage critical corporate information. These had relatively modest information requirements.

The arrival of the Internet as a mainstream technology created a revolution in application design and content development tools, and thereby in the types and quantity of the content created and manipulated by both business and consumer end-users. Today, most information being created is digital in nature, and must be made widely available immediately across a broad audience of users to achieve full value.

Hence organizations are challenged to manage exploding information volumes efficiently (to hold down costs), and to effectively distribute that information on-demand across different applications and out to employees, customers, and partners.

Network Storage Arrives :

Network Storage solutions such as Storage Area Networks (SANs) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) emerged in response to the twin needs to manage ever-growing volumes of information, and to make that information available on-demand to applications and end-users. Confronted with rapidly expanding storage requirements and reduced budgets, these two approaches help Enterprises and Service Providers meet the increasing demands to deliver information in all forms efficiently and cost-effectively.

SANs are dedicated, high-performance storage networks that connect one or more servers to a centralised pool of shared storage resources including arrays, tape drives and libraries. Traditionally, SANs were optimised for high performance applications such as relational databases and enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, etc.). For this reason, they use optimised transport media and protocols, including Fibre Channel and SCSI, and transfer storage processing overhead from servers to intelligent networked storage devices.

NAS, on the other hand, uses industry standard Ethernet networking and IP protocols to provide network storage access from one or more hosts to either centralised or distributed file servers. NAS is employed for file sharing and collaboration needs like web hosting, collaborative product design and knowledge management.

Benefits of Network Storage :

Initially, network storage was intended to help organizations lower costs by leveraging the power of networks to optimize the use of expensive storage resources. In the past, the majority of costs were in the storage hardware itself. The cost per megabyte of storage was measured in dollars per megabyte. Today, the cost of these hardware resources has dropped dramatically, and continues to do so. The cost of the storage hardware itself is measured in cents per megabyte, comprising less and less of the overall total-cost-of-ownership (TCO).

Even so, it is not unusual to see storage costs alone taking up between 20 and 50% of overall new capital purchases. Thus buyers are still interested in the ability of network storage to improve the efficiency of their storage hardware usage.

Network storage helps increase this efficiency by replacing “islands” of storage that are directly attached to servers (Direct-Attached Storage, or DAS) with a shared “pool” of storage available to all servers (either SAN or NAS). In a typical enterprise, the efficiency of DAS storage under UNIX may be less than 50%, and under Windows even worse - less than 40%. In contrast, by networking this storage, organizations can regularly achieve utilization levels of over 80%. Network storage also eliminates the need to “over-purchase” extra storage capacity by making a single pool of spare capacity available to all servers.

Beyond this, network storage helps organizations reduce IT costs in other ways. For example, another focus of today’s storage buyers is lowering overall TCO by reducing the amount of administrative overhead dedicated to managing storage resources. The approach is to centralize and consolidate the tools used to manage enterprise storage, replacing them with a single, automated storage management toolset that can effectively manage all storage assets. Powerful, centralized tools allow a much smaller group of administrators to manage the growing storage resource, freeing staff to focus on other, higher-value added activities.

Finally, network storage helps organizations to improve operational service levels, and reduce risks. Network storage typically delivers higher levels of reliability and availability, through the use of techniques such as RAID, mirroring, hot spare disks, and multi-pathing. These techniques also significantly improve performance for certain applications. Also, once enterprise information has been centralized and consolidated into a single storage pool, then advanced techniques such as remote replication can be employed to implement disaster recovery and business continuity solutions. Finally, it is possible to construct computing infrastructure, which can withstand even the failure of an entire data centre!

Present & Future Developments :

One of the main drivers of Network Storage today is also the move to re-architect and rationalize corporate datacenters and departmental computing infrastructure. Organizations are increasingly migrating to open standards and using standardized, repeatable componentry to build and deliver corporate computing infrastructure. Network storage assists in this effort by separating the server and storage infrastructure, thereby de-coupling server and storage buying cycles, and allowing IT purchasers to select best-of-breed components at each level.

Network storage technology itself continues to develop, as standardization efforts bear fruit, and previously incompatible hardware and software implementations are brought into line with industry-recognized standards. For example, it is now possible to construct SANs using equipment from multiple vendors, with greater confidence in the compatibility of products purchased from different vendors.

In another significant trend, the steady progression of Ethernet and IP-based technology development is leading to a new scenario where they will increasingly be used to construct not only NAS infrastructure, but also SANs themselves. The recent ratification of the iSCSI (IP-SCSI) standard will lead to the adoption of Ethernet and IP to construct departmental and remote-office SANs, and link them back to the SAN in the corporate data- centre. These and other low-cost network technologies are driving SAN and NAS into mainstream adoption, and even blurring the traditional lines between the two.

5 Points To Consider Before Purchasing Wireless Equipment

When you buy wireless equipment, you want to make sure that everything you buy will work in your house with the computer(s) you already have and over the distances required. Before you spend any money on equipment, consider the following issues.

Find out about the construction of your walls. In theory, wireless technology is capable of passing through walls and other obstacles relatively easily. However, in reality, some walls are of a thicker or more solid construction than others and may block some of your wireless signals. You only need to consider the interior walls, of course, and you will need to consider floor construction if you want to use your wireless network on different levels. Materials such as drywall, plywood, other kinds of wood including doors, and glass can be easily penetrated by wireless signals. You could run into trouble with brick, plaster, cement, metal, stone, and double-glazed glass, but it really depends on how porous a material is.

If your walls are made of the more difficult materials, your wireless connection may have a shorter range or a slower speed. This means you may have to spend more than you expected to get the kind of equipment that will overcome the structural barriers in your home.

Another thing to check for is potential interference with the wireless networks frequency range. Interference can slow down a network significantly and reduce its range as well. If there is interference, you will know about it because your connection will stop working.

The two most common sources of wireless network interference are wireless telephones and microwave ovens. The most common wireless network frequency, 2.4Ghz, is also a popular wireless phone frequency, although you can find phones that operate on other frequencies. Microwaves, however, always operate at about 2.4 Ghz. It is okay to have these devices in your house, but they should not be in the same room with any computer hooked to your wireless connection.

You should begin your equipment search by determining what you need to create an effective network. You should think about the distances you need to cover and whether you have to go through any stone or brick walls. You can then determine how much you want to spend.

If you live in a small house that is made of wood, you can probably buy the least expensive equipment you can find. Remember, the more problems that potentially exist in your network, the more power you need to overcome them, and the more the equipment will cost.

Reading reviews written by experts and other wireless network users can be a big help in selecting equipment. It is always good to get several opinions about a product, particularly if you are buying it online. If you can see some wireless equipment actually in operation, that is even better.

If you are a Windows user, you will have a much easier time implementing your wireless network if you install and/or update to the latest version of Windows. Wireless was not a common technology when previous Windows versions were released, so they do not have built-in support for it.

A wireless network will be much easier to set up if you have the Windows XP Service Pack 2 version. It has lots of tools for configuring and using wireless technology that are lacking in other versions.
